Dream Theater (originally named Majesty) formed in 1985 while John Petrucci (lead guitarist), Mike Portnoy (drummer), and John Myung (bassist) attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. James LaBrie (vocalist) successfully auditioned in 1991, and Jordan Rudess (keyboardist) joined in 1994. Dream Theater, in my eyes, truly define the genre of music that is progressive rock. They can play amazing music, and they have what many modern bands lack--substantial lyrics. They tell an amazing story.
